Syllabus
Social Entrepreneurship
This course will provide an overview of the concept and practice of social entrepreneurship. Social entrepreneurship has become increasingly popular over the last two decades as an alternative approach to addressing the world ’s social and environmental problems. Social entrepreneurs are individuals who have identified a social need and have sought solutions through the application of business and commerce. Social entrepreneurs typically work with others in seeking to empower members of disadvantaged groups by providing them opportunities to participate in the formal economy. This can be thought of as business-inspired solutions to social problems. Although the primary focus of social entrepreneurship has been in less developed countries, opportunities for social entrepreneurship exist in every country. In this course students will learn about how social entrepreneurs are using businesses to affect social change around the world, how to identify opportunities for social entrepreneurship, how to address the tensions faced by social enterprises, how to launch a social enterprise, and how to measure impact in the context of social entrepreneurship.
